In a country burgeoning with talented musicians in every corner, publicity and media coverage sometimes becomes a bigger factor in determining success than the music itself. This is especially true for independent artistes, only a handful of whom ever find a mention in the mainstream space of music journalism. With its offbeat reporting and unwavering dedication to shine the limelight on these very artists, The Indian Music Diaries aims to cover that chasm.

TIMD, which started as an Instagram page created by Akshay Kapoor in August 2014, has now expanded to Facebook and is soon coming out with its own website. It separates itself from mainstream journalism with its innovative approach in reporting music almost exclusively through pictures and video content. Not limiting themselves to being a publication adds a much needed element of versatility in content that gives TIMD a unique edge in the space that it occupies.

Akshay recounts the beginning of TIMD, "I found that there were a lot of great bands around my area which were not being heard outside. The idea was to give these indie musicians, especially the small bands, a voice. I was disappointed that the other publications were not doing a good enough job in bringing these sounds out to the larger public, so the Indian Music Diaries was meant to bridge that gap."

It is no mean task to gather information and insight from an industry that largely flies below the radar in the general consciousness. "The idea is not to focus on any particular genre. We relentlessly pursue any and everything that is connected with independent music on social media and through our networks. We scour the web for information, Facebook is a great platform for this. Apart from this we are in constant touch with the artist community and the people connected with it." says Akshay, describing the sources where TIMD finds its content. "I feel like there is still a lot of work to be done in reaching out to the independent community and bringing these artists out in the public eye. There are a lot of things we can do, but are unable to because we are basically a DIY project and there is always a resource crunch." He adds

The biggest strength of TIMD is perhaps its firm grasp on the entirety of the Indian independent music spectrum. Rarely is there a development, a festival or a gig that happens in the "scene" without it being featured on their social media pages. In doing so the team has ceaselessly worked towards creating a consolidated community of the fans, the artists and other like-minded people, bringing them together in an ever expanding circle of people who are striving to build up sustainability and appreciation for independent music in the country.
