Mamita Debbarma, 23, an electrical and electronics engineer from Tripura was crowned Fbb Colours Femina Miss India Tripura this year. With the national beauty pageant contest to begin in May this year, the girl from the tiny NE state has already started dreaming to fill in the shoes of reigning Miss World Manushi Chhillar. Mamita opens up in an interview with TNT- The Northeast Today.

TNT: You have become the Miss India beauty pageant contestant from Tripura. How does it feel?

Mamita: It feels like a dream come true and everything changed in a jiffy. It feels like I am on the top of the world.

TNT: How did you start modeling at the first place?

Mamita: I loved it since childhood. I used to follow them. I am quite passionate about models.

TNT: What were your academic pursuits so far?

Mamita: I have just passed my under-graduate program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from GGI, Ludhina, Punjab.

TNT: An engineer or a model – how do you prefer being in life ahead?

Mamita: I believe you should not be stuck with one thing. People should be multi-faceted in their approach to life. They should multi-task also. I believe I would be an engineering professional but would also pursue modeling as a passion.

TNT: Has your family supported you in this modeling venture of yours?

Mamita: My family is very supportive. It is because of them that I am here today. They never said 'no' to anything. They are with me all the time.

TNT: Whom would you give credit for your success?

Mamita: I give all the credit to my dad. Before engineering, I had other ambitions. I wanted to go for medical courses. My father encouraged me to pursue engineering and I have a host of avenues open before me now. And of course, he has always supported me in modeling. From a small state like Tripura, it is hard to get so much support from a traditional family.

TNT: We hear you are related to the Tripura royal family. Is that true?

Mamita: I am from the Tripura royal family. I am the great grand-daughter of Gopal Thakur, the king's administrator at Amtali.

TNT: What is your take on potential of fashion industry in NE India?

Mamita: I feel Northeast India is very upgraded in fashion. People from this region have a great sense of style and fashion more than any other state.

TNT: The 55th Fbb Femina Miss India contest is slated to begin in May this year. The grand finale is likely to be held at Mumbai in June. Are you ready to take on the others?

Mamita: The competition is very tough. I need to give my blood and sweat. This is not that easy. But I shall give my best.
