Kalimpong, November 16, 2017: The first international competition in Gangtok organised by the Sikkim Paragliding Association (SPA) will take place in the month of December from the 17th till the 21st.

Over 125 paragliders from India and abroad are expected to take part in Sikkim's first Paragliding Red Panda International Accuracy Open Championship. It is also a first time for Kalimpong and Darjeeling to witness this competition in their region where paragliding is gaining popularity as part of adventure tourism.

The SPA said that the event had been sanctioned by the Federation Aeronautique International (FAI), and could go a long way in putting Sikkim on the world map.  Manoj Kumar Chettri, the SPA spokesman said, "Our aim is to promote Sikkim as a destination for adventure tourism and put our state on the map of the paragliding world."

The paragliders will take off from the Anee Gumpa hilltop perched at a height of 1450m and land on the Khel Gaon ground at Reshithang.  The distance between the take-off point and the landing spot is about 1km as the crow flies.
