Tripura: Padma Shri awardee Beni Chandra Jamatia passes away

Agartala: Padma Shree awardee Beni Chandra Jamatia died on December 14, at his residence because of old age, family sources confirmed.

Jamatia was 92, and died at his residence in Matabari, Gomti district in Tripura.

Jamatia’s contribution towards the Tripura indigenous includes a book in Kokborok dialect called "Baul", in the Roman script. The book is a narrative on Rukmini’s marriage to Krishna, and also on the Kangsa’s murder.

In compilation with his literary works, Jamatia also composed songs for the narrative, later on.

Jamatia was a skilled writer, poet and a composer which earned him the national award.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has also condoled Jamatia's death.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Benichandra Jamatiaji, the pride of Tripura, honoured with the Padma Shri. I wish peace to his disembodied soul. I extend my deepest condolences to his family. He will forever shine in the hearts of the people of Tripura through his creation. Om Shanti(translated),” tweeted CM Biplab Kumar Deb.
