Meghalaya: This Jaintia village is known for its pottery in the international market! Tyrshang unique
Shillong, Dec 22: Tyrshang is a medium size village located in Thadlaskein of Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya with total 179 families residing. The Tyrshang village has population of 1214 of which 585 are males while 629 are females as per Population Census 2011.
The people of this village unlike many villages in the Northeast or in India as a whole, do not find agriculture or agricultural pursuits to provide them with the primary source of their income.
Infact, a small group of women from this village produce some the most exquisite hand-made pottery that are not only used locally for preparing the Khasi 'putharo' but also meant for religious purposes.
Apart from the Doloi who uses the pottery produced by the womenfolk of this village for religious practices, their produce are also internationally acclaimed and specifically in high demand in countries like Japan and Korea who imports their goods and uses them for their religious practices as well.
The important aspect of why their pottery is so much acclaimed then perhaps lies in the pottery making tradition of the people of Tyrshang who have continued to produce fine products by simply using their hands throughout the process. They would not use not even a single mould for it would accelerate output but deteriorate quality.
Another aspect of the pottery produced by this people is that the clay used for this process is of a blackish coloration and it can only be acquired from the Sung Valley in Jaintia Hills.
This village is known for its uniqueness to the outside world while many a locally placed populace often go by not knowing or oblivious even to this village's significance. Tyrshang is indefinitely unique and its hand-made produce a stand-alone.
