SHILLONG: With the State Government failing to meet the deadline to withdraw the notification issued by the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to extend its jurisdiction into areas falling under the KHADC within a week's time, HSPDP vice president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit along with his supporters broke barricades and barged into the Secretariat today.
Following a rally held at the Maki grounds which was attended by villagers, Basaiawmoit along with his supporters held a rally to the Secretariat. They were intercepted by a human barricade of Policemen at Barik point which the supporters managed to cross.
To keep the unruly crowd under control, the police had to fire tear gas and order a lathicharge. With the protestors pelting stones, there are initial reports of minor injuries and that includes a media person as well.
The supporters broke through three barricades set by the police all along the way. During the scuffle, the crowd was divided into two groups wherein one including Basaiawmoit was held back.
Latest reports from the spot suggest that Basaiawmoit has gained access to the Secretariat and is holding talks with Home Minister, Roshan Warjri and Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh. (TNT News)
