Tripura’s chess genius wins Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar

Arshiya Das, a nine-year-old girl from Agartala and a chess genius who clinched gold at the Asian School Chess Championship in 2019, was awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar on Monday.

Arshiya has won various championship titles both in the national and international chess circuit.

For this year’s Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, with 32 other awardees across the country, Arshiya was the first and only girl chess player from North-East India who clinched this title.

“It is a glory for us that Arshiya got the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar medal,” West Tripura District District Magistrate (DM) Shailesh Yadav said.

Arshiya and her parents attended the virtual award ceremony at the DM office at Agartala. Her mother Arnisha Nath Das said that it is a proud moment as a parent over Arshiya’s award.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also congratulated Arshiya for her success.
