AGARTALA

We have extended section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1973 for two more days in Agartala city, said West Tripura District Magistrate Shailesh Kumar Yadav on Wednesday.

“Around 165 people have been arrested from the ‘dharna’ stage of Paradise Chaumuhani this morning. They arrested another 38 in front of the Chief Minister’s house,” Yadav said.

The District Magistrate also informed that police used water cannons, tear gas, and light baton charges to disperse the protesting teachers.

“Several police officers were injured, and we took the teachers who met with injuries to the hospital,” he said.

Meanwhile, the sacked teachers arrested from Dharna Mancha in the morning took to the RK Nagar TSR camp and organised a hunger strike.

“The government provided food in the detention camp, but the teachers returned it saying that they would not touch any food provided by the government. They were later released in the evening,” said one of the agitating teachers.

Opposition leader Manik Sarkar visited the injured at IGM Hospital in the evening and said that the government could have resolved the issue through dialogue.
