The Tripura High Court on Tuesday ordered the state government to conduct the Autonomous District Council (ADC) election by May 17 this year.
The order was passed by a division bench of Tripura High Court led by Chief Justice AK Qureshi and Justice SG Chatterjee after hearing a writ petition filed by Apu Debbarma for the speedy selection of ADC members.
The High Court gave its final verdict and said that the term of the administrator can no longer be extended.
The tenure of the Tripura ADC expired on May 17 last year after which the government could not conduct any election because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Governor of Tripura had appointed former Chief Secretary G Kameshwar Rao as administrator for the ADC for six months, and as there was no election, the term was again extended for six months.
The opposition party namely CPI-M and Congress had demanded that the ADC elections must be conducted immediately alleging that the BJP's had delayed the elections all this while.
