AGARTALA:

The Tripura government provided external support to 88 militants who surrendered before Chief Minister Biplab Deb and other top-level officials on August 13 of last year.

Tripura minister NC Debbarma, on Thursday, handed over a cheque worth Rs 1 lakh each to the 136 former militants, wishing that the help would benefit the former rebels.

An agreement was also signed between the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) leaders, state government, and the central government to which the government will provide an economic package and rehabilitation for the former militants.

Debbarma stated that “Earlier Northeast was badly affected by the insurgency problem. But, after Modi came to power, the insurgency problem has been narrowed down in the region.”

He also said, “The problem of extremism has gone from here and we should maintain the peace and development here.”
