AGARTALA:

Communist Party of India (Marxist) team led by opposition leader Manik Sarkar on Tuesday, was prevented from visiting the Khayerpur area to review the situation following an attack on senior CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar’s house by unknown miscreants on December 20.

In the ensuing attack, two CPI-M supporters, Litan Das and Swadhananda Das, who were reportedly assaulted, are said to be in a serious condition and, have been shifted to Kolkata for further treatment.

The CPI-M state committee had alleged the BJP of backing the miscreants involved in the attack.

The CPI-M team was en route to Khayerpur to take stock of the situation, but BJP supporters allegedly started blocking the road at Kashipur area.

As per sources, BJP supporters have demanded the arrest of Pabitra Kar and shouted slogans such as ‘Manik Sarkar go back’.

Additional Superintendent of Police of West Tripura District, on reaching ground zero, said, “On receiving information about the blockade, the police swung into action to prevent any untoward incident and to control the overall situation.”

It may be recalled that Pabitra Kar registered victory from the Khayerpur assembly constituency five times, but lost the stronghold in the last assembly election.
