AGARTALA:

Tripura celebrates ‘Poush Sankranti’ (Month of Poush of Bengali calendar) with the rest of the country, on Thursday.

While the Bengalis celebrate it as Poush Sankranti or Makar Sankranti, the indigenous people celebrate the day as ‘Hangrai’.

People across the state celebrate the occasion with great zeal and prepare ethnic delicacies and various homemade food items.

Devotees take holy baths in rivers and perform rituals like Tarpan, Asthi Visarjan and GangaPuja.

Men also offer ‘Tarpan’ (Watering the living descendants for the love and satisfaction) to their ancestors.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb attended the Tirthamukh mela and greeted the people on the auspicious occasion. He also took a holy dip in Dumbur lake at Tirthamukh.

Several other ministers including Mevar Kumar Jamatia and MLA Rampad Jamatia accompanied the CM.
