Tripura: Banks join nationwide protest against privatisation

AGARTALA:

The two-day bank strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, received an overwhelming response in the northeastern state of Tripura as nearly 90 per cent of bank branches closed their doors on Monday.

Only cooperative banks remained open, while several banks in the capital city of Agartala took part in the two-day nationwide strike against the privatisation of Public Sector Banks and ‘retrograde banking reforms’.

In her budget speech, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed about the privatisation of two national banks and an insurance company in the current financial year.

Several employee organisations are protesting the decision, with the United Forum of Bank Unions stating that “over a million people are involved in banking services across the country.”
