Social organisation in Tripura opposes Tring Utsav 2020

Agartala: Tripura social organisation Jamatia Hoda (JT) on Monday opposed the annual Tring Utsav, terming the event as a “recent trend” not relevant with the old culture.

“Some elements are trying to destroy the culture and heritage of the state by imposing Tring Festival on the tribals of Tripura,” JT advisor Bichitra Jamatia said.

Reportedly, BJP legislator Rampad Jamatia has written a letter to the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura on the same.

However, the minister was unavailable for a reply on the controversies surrounding the festival.

Contrasting opinions by the tribals belonging to the older generation and newer ones have become a major conflict about the exact dates of Tripura’s New Year celebration.

The tribal communities of Tripura believe that the new year starts from the December 22 which is known as “Tipra Era”.

Tribals of Tripura celebrate the Tring Festival on December 21-22.

Jamatia Hoda through a statement said, “December 21-22 cannot be the start of Tripura Era as the Tripura Gazette published by the Manikya dynasty marks 1st day of Baishakh as the 'new year'."

Meanwhile, some other political parties like CPIM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Council) have also come forward to express objection to the festival.

It may be mentioned that for the past 25 years, the festival has been celebrated unopposed in Tripura.
