AGARTALA:

Extremists have mushroomed in Tripura, BSF Inspector General (IG) of Tripura Frontier, Sushanta Kumar Nath informed in a press conference on Thursday.

“We have been aware since the past one-year that insurgency activities have again started in the state,” he said.

“With close coordination with the state government, state police, and other agencies working in this field, we have been taking all necessary steps to maintain the highest vigil and highest alert,” he added.

The IG said the intelligence inputs suggest militants are active in some areas within the internal border and outside the Indo-Bangla border.

Around 95 percent of Indo-Bangla border has been fenced so far while works could not expedited in the remaining areas due to the alleged persistent opposition from Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB).

"We are in touch with BGB authority to get No Objection Certificate (NOC) which is required to undertake single fencing work within 150 yards of the IB border", he said.

He also reported the amount of contraband seized by the anti-narcotics team during 2020.

“We seized contraband items and gold worth Rs. 41.95 crore. Finished ganja valued at Rs. 9.41 crore was seized and handed over to the police,” he said.

“BSF arrested over 131 persons attempting to cross the International border, out of which 85 were Indian Nationals and 46 Bangladeshi Nationals,” he added.
