The programme to mark the formation of Tripura State was celebrated at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Thursday evening.
Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb handed over a memento, cash prize and other gifts to Dipa Karmakar and five others.
This is the first time that the state government decided to honour eminent personalities on the Statehood Day programme for their contribution to the state.
While Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar received the Tripura Bhibushan Award, Chess wonder girl Arshiya Das got the Tripura Bhusan Award. Five persons received the Nagarik Samman and nine individuals were honoured with the Purna Nagarik Samman Award.
Governor Ramesh Bais, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma, cabinet ministers -- Manoj Kanti Deb and Mevar Kumar Jamatia also attended the programme.
Inaugurating the main programme of Statehood Day at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, Governor Ramesh Bais said the state has been marching ahead because of proper implementation of the Central and state government schemes.
While recalling the state's journey from a princely to a full-fledged state, Bais said, "Tripura joined the Indian Union on October 5, 1949. The last king, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore had decided to get Tripura joined with Indian Union before the independence but he could not do so. His wife Kanchan Prabha Devi put a signature on the merger agreement", he said.
Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb highlighted the state government's works for the welfare of the common people.
“Today is a great and historic day for Tripura. On the occasion of Statehood Day, I am happy to announce that the State Government has been pursuing the overall development of Tripura," Deb said.
The Chief Minister said, without making a statistical comparison with the previous government, the new government is moving towards the development in all aspects with a new mentality.
"The one and only goal of the state government is to continue welfare programmes to realise the dream of building a better Tripura," he added.
Deb informed that the per capita income has increased in Tripura and projects like Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Integrated Check Post (ICP) and Feni bridge are coming up in Sabroom, about 73 kms south of Agartala, which will create a positive impact on the state's socio-economic condition. "These projects are being developed during the past two and half years", he said.
