AGARTALA:

A cattle smuggler was allegedly shot dead by jawans of the BSF 166 battalion at the Yaqubnagar border in North Tripura district during the wee hours on Saturday.

According to the BSF, while patrolling the area, the jawans saw a group of miscreants cutting the border fencing.

"While trying to stop both the Indian and Bangladeshi nationals (from committing the act), the jawans were attacked with weapons," claimed Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Rajeev Dua.

Following the attack, the BSF opened fire, killing a Bangladeshi national.

The "smuggler" has been identified as Bappa Mia, a Bangladeshi national.

The locals said that cattle smuggling is an everyday affair in the border area.

They added that miscreants from both sides of the border would lift cattle from the villages to smuggle it to Bangladesh.
