AGARTALA:

As India has started the COVID-19 vaccination drive across the country, there have been reports of vaccines being wasted in some or the other form.

According to media reports, about 5000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been wasted in 5 states, and Tripura accounts for the highest wastage.

A report stated that approximately 10 per cent of the vaccines have been wasted in Tripura so far.

Dr Kallol Roy, Tripura’s immunisation officer, while speaking to the TNT-The Northeast Today informed that between January 29 and 30 about 611 vaccines went in waste.

The doctor stated that the primary reason for the wastage is because of the less number of recipients compared to the number of vaccines per vial.

“The vaccines that have been provided to the state have a short lifespan, approximately 4 hours, so if they are not used within that timeframe it goes to waste,” Roy said.

The doctor further stated the other reasons for the wastage is improper storage and wear and tear of the consignment.

It was reported that till Thursday about 1,623 or 11 per cent of the total vaccine doses were wasted.
