AGARTALA: A local court of Tripura on Saturday sent 12 persons, convicted of Congress MLA Parimal Saha to life imprisonment.
The court yesterday convicted the 12 persons on murder charge and acquitted five of the charge due to lack of evidence. Charge sheet against total 25 murder accused persons were filed on April 29 in 1983. During the trial, 7 accused died and one is still absconding.
Cases were taken against them under Section 302/, 307/120 (b), 326, 147, 148, 149 of Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of Exclusive Substances Act.
Congress MLA Parimal Saha was hacked to death on April 7 in 1983.
Newly-elected CLP Gopal Roy welcomed the judgment on Parimal Saha murder case and said that his family members get justice after long 33 years.
He also blamed the Left government for delay in judgment as they tried to 'safeguard' the murder convicts. "The murder case was pending for the last 33 years due to the Left government. The government intentionally tried to safeguard the convicts. We are thankful to the court for the judgment," Roy said.
On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Arun Kanti Bhowmik held both CPM and Congress for the delay in judgment of the murder case.
"The Left was in power when Parimal Saha was murdered. Still, no justice was done during their period. Moreover, the coalition government (Congress-TU) since 1988-1993 also proved failure in this case. However, we are satisfied with the court's judgment," he said.
