Tripura: ex-SDM absconding on rape charges
AGARTALA: An FIR was lodged against a senior Tripura Civil Service officer at West Agartala Women Police Station for raping a woman of minority community, also a mother of two children. Till now, he is absconding, a police official said.
Panna Ahmed, who has been transferred as joint director of Sports and Youth Affairs Department recently, reportedly raped the woman on Monday when she came to his residence at South Ramnagar in Agartala to discuss about house rent.
Ahmed was former SDM of Sonamura in Sepahijala District and later was transferred to Panisagar in North District before he got the offcer of joint director.
According to the rape survivor, Panna Ahmed called her to his residence to discuss about house rent. As she arrived in his residence, he forcefully raped her. He also reportedly threatened her if she dared to tell anyone. When she protested, he physically assaulted her.
She later informed her husband, who is a lawyer practicing in Sonamura court and lodged a complaint against Ahmed. Police registered the case under Section 342, 376, 506 of Indian Penal Code last evening.
Though police rushed to his residence to arrest him, he was found absconding.
At this, a group of Congress people including the students' wing – NSUI gheraoed Chief Minister Manik Sarkar's residence later in the evening demanding immediate arrest of the ex-SDM.
Also, a delegation of Trinamool Congress gave a memorandum to  the West Agartala Women Police seeking his arrest and stringent action against him.
