Tripura: BJP leader assaulted and raped

AGARTALA: A 45-year-old woman, who is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was reportedly assaulted and raped by a CPM cadre at a remote village of Khowai District. Though the complaint was lodged 12 hours before the publishing of this article, the accused is yet to be arrested, said a senior police official.

The victim, is a mother of two and a BJP contestant in the last Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council's Village Committee elections.

Police sources said that the accused identified as Dumpa Hrankhawl , 26, is a resident of Rangamura village. Dumpa allegedly beat up his victim with a torch on the night of March 25 while she was on her way back home at Budhirai Para under Teliamura Police Station. After assaulting her, Dumpa reportedly raped her.

She lodged a complaint against him at the police station, but withheld the rape incident. However she later accused him of raping her. Meanwhile, the police are investigating the matter.

"She delayed complaining of rape because of shame. However, later, she lodged a rape-case against him. We demand the police to arrest him soon, otherwise, we will go for an agitation," BJP president Biplab Deb told TNT – The Northeast Today.
