Tripura: 840 cases of violence against women till Jan 2015

AGARTALA: Though police claimed to cut down the crime rate against women compared to past fiscal years, the cases related to dowry deaths, rape and kidnapping are recorded to be highest among other crimes. Women are still prone to dowry related torture, rape, gang rape, kidnapping etc. despite the bigwigs of the state giving tall claims of spreading awareness messages against such social stigma. A total of 840 cases related to violence against women has been recorded in the state till January, 2015. Among the crimes, dowry death cases are surpassing which stands at 544.

  1. Dowry death: Police recorded total 796 dowry death cases across the state in 2012-13. However, the figure rose at 880 in 2013-14 fiscal year. However, the 2014-15 record confirmed 544 dowry deaths.
  2. Rape: A total of 108 rape cases were recorded in 2012-13. The next fiscal year, 107 rape cases were registered.
  3. Kidnapping: A total of 82 cases of women kidnapping were registered by January, 2015 in 2014-15. The figure was 124 in 2013-14. The rate was 104 in 2012-13.
  4. Gang rape: A total of 11 cases were recorded in 2012-13. The number was 14 in 2013-14 while the 2014-15 witnessed 13 such cases.
  5. Minor rape: A total of 61 cases of minor rape were recorded in 2014-15. The number was 79 in 2013-14 and the rate was 83 in 2012-13.
  6. Child rape: A total of 33 cases relating to child rape were registered at different police stations till January, 2015 in 2014-15. The figure was 27 in 2012-13 whereas, the record showed 37 cases in 2013-14.
