Top GNLA ‘Area Commander’ surrenders before police

SHILLONG: Another big blow to the rank and file of the Garo National Liberation Army(GNLA) as counter insurgency operations which have intensified in Garo Hills has brought another top cadre holding the rank of 'Area commander' in charge of North Garo Hills under the police dragnet.

Ipseng D Shira surrendered before Mendipathar Police Station at 10.30 am along with six rounds of 7.62 mm. Together with Shira another two GNLA cadres surrendered before the police today.

According to sources within the police, Shira surrendered because he cannot stand continued police operation in Garo Hills and subsequently approached the church leaders who suggested him to lay down his arms and return to the mainstream.
