GUWAHATI: In major blow for the defected Congress MLAs, the Gauhati High Court refused to stay Assam Assembly Speaker's decision to disqualify them when they moved the court challenging the judgment.
A single bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy of the court on Tuesday took up the plea from the defected Congress MLAs challenging their disqualification by Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi. But much to their utter disappointment, the court upheld the disqualification and fixed January 8 next year the date of hearing.
After conducting a hearing on Saturday, the Speaker disqualified Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Barua, Rajen Barthakur, Kripanath Malla, Abu Taher Bepari, Balin Chetia, Binanda Saikia, Pallav Lochan Das and Pradan Baruah for joining BJP without formally resigning as Congress MLA.
