Neurosurgery was successfully performed for the first time at Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital in Sikkim’s capital city of Gangtok on Sunday.

Earlier, neurosurgery cases were referred to hospitals outside the state because of a lack of neurosurgeons.

However, the state government recently appointed two qualified neurosurgeons, and the first surgery was performed on a 61-year-old patient.

Dr. Pranav Rai performed the surgery with the help of anaesthetists Dr Nilima, Dr Kinga and OT staff.

According to reports, the patient gained consciousness soon after the surgery.

Similarly, gastroenterologists conducted gastrointestinal endoscopy and band ligations of oesophageal varices for the first time at Gyalshing District Hospital.

Paediatric surgeons and cardiologists also conducted similar operations at Namchi District Hospital.

Besides this, super-specialist district outreach programmes are also gaining traction in the state.

“I express my gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, staff and the people who have been working tirelessly to make this program a success. I encourage them to carry on with their noble deed to further enhance the medical facilities in the state,” Sikkim Chief Minister P.S. Golay said.
