The Sikkim Transport Department, on Wednesday, issued an order retracting its earlier decision on doubling of fares compared to the previous rates.

The order includes taxis and buses which are travelling to and from major routes.

A local taxi driver on the condition of anonymity complained about the government not reviewing fares.

"Long spells of lockdown in Sikkim have dented my family’s yearly budget," he said.

A daily commuter, Surabhi Sharma while speaking to this reporter has welcomed the government’s move to keep fares of local taxis unchanged as she fears losing her monthly savings.

Local taxis are a lifeline to most of the people in Sikkim, who rely on small vehicles to navigate through the rough roads and steep terrain of the Himalayan state.
