GANGTOK:

The much-awaited Pakyong Airport finally became operational when a SpiceJet flight from New Delhi landed here on Saturday.

In the first inbound flight, 57 passengers will fly from New Delhi to Pakyong and 27 others will take an outbound flight to Delhi

Speaking to reporters about the landmark flight, CM PS Golay said, “I am grateful to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Hon’ble Minister-in-charge, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri for their timely intervention. The airport operations were put on halt because of the unplanned management and other issues. As soon as we formed the Government, we have rectified the issues and also installed the all-weather landing system which was previously missing.”

He further informed that the event marks the commencement of a new era of travel in Sikkim, and it will help in mitigating issues faced by the state in terms of transportation.

It is important to note that the Pakyong airport inaugurated in September 2018 stopped operations after one year because of visibility issues and agitation from the local villagers.
