Sikkim CM clarifies delay in constructing Govt College in Geyzing

GANGTOK:

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay, on Monday, narrated a sequence of events that led to the delay in constructing the Sikkim Government College in Geyzing.

While addressing the gathering during an official programme at Assam Lingzey, Golay said the government is looking at all potential solutions to build the college infrastructure and that students should not expect impossible overnight results concerning the project.

“The college construction work went through many hurdles starting from the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government tenure to the present government,” Golay said.

“There was an issue of land compensation which got resolved late and finally tender notice was issued by the previous government. But, again there was no fund allocated in the budget for the college building by the then government, and the contractor halted the construction work midway in 2019-20,” he said.

The CM also stated that the ruling government had allocated funds for the first phase of work, which was suspended because of the lockdown.

Concerning the workforce, Golay said that migrant labourers left Sikkim after the lockdown.

Golay stated there was a lack of workforce and that work resumed on a “war footing” after the workforce returned.
