Rearing of sheep is one of the primary occupations of the people living in the hilly regions of Sikkim, and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services distributed 170 Banpala sheep to farmers on January 29.
They distributed the sheep to the farmers of four constituencies of West district, namely Yuksom Tashiding, Manebong Dentam, Daramdin, and Gyalshing Bermiok as part of the National Livestock Mission started by the government for the upliftment of farmers.
Thirty-four beneficiaries received the livestock along with a financial incentive of Rs 3,000 each for construction of night shelters, feed supplements and insurance.
The department also stated that villagers and youths of the region would have a source of income thanks to the initiative.
