GANGTOK:

The recent protests by the students of Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing over the delay in the construction of college infrastructure, took an ugly turn on Friday (January 5) when police detained two students on alleged rioting charges.

The students had reportedly camped outside the office of the Additional Chief Secretary of Education demanding a meeting with the Education Minister.

Police detained two students on various charges, and sources state that the students are yet to be released.

However, Sikkim Police are silent on the matter.

The demand for better college infrastructure had been in focus since the past year as students, and members of the Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum (SPYF) began massive campaigns and protests.
