Gangtok team bags top prize in an inter-rehab centre futsal tournament

GANGTOK:

Recovering Fellow Brothers, a Gangtok-based futsal team, emerged victorious after a 2-1 win over rivals United Fellowship from Siliguri during a two-day inter-rehab futsal tournament in Gangtok on December 19 and 20.

A total of 18 teams from rehabilitation centres from across Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri took part in the tournament which was organised by the Grace Detoxification Centre, under the banner of the Grace Foundation.

Khadi Board chairperson Chung Chung Bhutia attended the event as the guest of honour for the semi-final matches along with the chairman of the IT Department, Tenzing Lamtha, as the chief guest.

Before the match started, Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba lauded the organisers for taking up such an initiative for recovering drug and alcohol users.

“This kind of tournament is a must. It’s encouraging. The individuals who had made mistakes in their life are rectifying themselves, and I laud their effort. I am sure their participation in sports activities will set an example for others who are in the wrong path,” Subba said.

The winning team was awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. The runners up team were awarded a trophy along with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.

All other participating teams were handed certificates and individual honours.

Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, the chief patron of the tournament, informed that the tournament was held with strict adherence to all COVID-19 guidelines and health protocols as laid down by the state government.
