Ranji Trophy: Mighty Delhi tamed by Assam in famous win

GUWAHATI: Assam cricket team continued its magnificent run in the 2015/16 Ranji Trophy season as they handed Delhi their first defeat of the season by registering a five-wicket win at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

It was a low-scoring affair all through the four days. Assam had a slender first-innings lead over Delhi, who could manage only 149 and 172 in the match. They were set a target of 165 to win which they eventually achieved for the loss of 5 wickets. Opener Rahul Hazarika top scored with his 59.

Starting the 4th day play Assam need 95 more runs to register their third consecutive win after the hosts reached 70 for 3 in their pursuit of 165-run target set by Delhi and penultimate day of their Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match . After drawing with defending champions Karnataka, Assam beat former back-to-back winners Rajasthan by an innings, and then toppled Haryana at home in Lahli and are now beat strong Delhi by 5 wickets.

Credit must go to Assam bowlers, who after wrapping Delhi for 149 in the first innings, bundled out the visitors for another below-par 172 in the second essay. Resuming at the overnight score of 101 for four, Delhi last seven wickets contributed just 71 runs with spin duo of Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad (3/49) and Amit Verma (3/42) inflicting bulk of the damage.
