Northeast girl represents India in UN’s ‘Winter Youth Assembly’!

Roshnila Gurung from Sikkim was one amongst the five Indian youth delegates who represented the country in the 19th edition of the 'Winter Youth Assembly' at the very prestigious United Nations headquarters in New York City.

 The three day long assembly which commenced on 1st February was based on the theme of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals with the opening and closing ceremony being held in the very elusive General Assembly hall of the United Nations. The assembly was addressed by UN Ambassadors and high level officials and dignitaries. Amongst the speakers were President of the 71st United Nations General Assembly His Excellency Mr.Peter Thomson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the UN, Her Excellency Ms.Gillian Bird, Ambassador and Permanent representative of Denmark to the UN His Excellency Mr. I.B Peterson , Representative of the Secretary General and head of the UN office in Belgrade,Honorary chair,2017 winter youth assembly at the UN Her Excellency Ms.Simona-Mirela Miculescu, Special Adviser of the Secretary General on the 2030 agenda for sustainable Development and Climate Change Dr. David Nabarro, Special Representative to the UN and Director, ILO-New York Mr.Vinicius Pinheiro, Deputy Director,UN Environment-New York Mr.Jamil Ahmed and Director Global Monitoring report, UNESCO Mr.Aaron Benavot.

The assembly also included multiple interactive panel, workshop and discussions led by various UN officials on the progress of achieving the SDGs which covered key topics such as Education, Climate Change, Gender Equality, Child Poverty, Refugee Crisis and so on.

Roshnila shares this experience of hers, as once in a lifetime opportunity that will enhance her academic perspective and will enable her to contribute significantly in strengthening and supporting the sustainable development goals. She also states that she would like to share her experience with fellow Sikkimese as she believes each one is capable given the right guidance and self-persistence.

The closing ceremony of the United Nations Youth Assembly saw the address by the very distinguished Ahmed Alhendawi, the first ever United Nations Secretary- General's Envoy on Youth.
