GUWAHATI | Dec 6, 2019:

The Northeast Students' Organization (NESO) has called for an all-Northeast bandh on December 10 from 5 am to 4 pm in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019. Emergency services are exempted from purview of the bandh.

The organisation, which comprises of students' unions from across the northeast said that the bandh is their call for action against the intention of the Central Government of India to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

Incidentally, the draft bill will be placed before the Parliament on December 10.

Reiterating their stand on CAB, NESO said that they want the entire region to be exempted from the bill and not just the ILP states or areas that come under Sixth Schedule.

The draft bill reads, "Nothing in this section shall apply to tribal areas of AssamMeghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura as included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and the area covered under 'The Inner Line' notified under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873."

"The bill which is a highly sensitive matter and if implemented, it will threaten the existence of the indigenous population of the region," said NESO in their release issued here on Friday adding "It is better to lose one day of work, than to lose our homeland forever. "

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya government on Friday had expressed their unhappiness with the draft bill and demanded that the entire state be exempted from the bill and not just the schedule areas.
