Over 80 free driving licenses issued to female drivers in Nagaland

In a bid to empower women drivers, the Wokha District Administration on Thursday distributed free driving license for girls under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.

As many as 83 smart card driving licenses were issued to beneficiaries at a programme held at the Office of Wokha Deputy Commissioner in Nagaland on Thursday, coinciding with the Road Safety Month.

The initiative was rolled out in collaboration with the District Level Centre for Women-Mahila Shakti Kendra and the Department of District Transport Office, Wokha.

The initiative for the same started in the second week of October 2020, where interested girls/candidates wanting to obtain driving license were enlisted, and a certain laid down procedure like driving class, driving test and other requirements were trained to the beneficiaries and the culmination programmed was held on Feb 4 at the DC’s office in Wokha.

The Wokha Motor Vehicle Officer Masetshilong Longkumer, while giving away the cards to the beneficiaries, highlighted about the Motor Vehicle Acts, the basics rules while taking the wheel and urged them to always carry the required documents while on the road.

The MVO also stated that during the Road Safety month, various kinds of awareness activities involving the taxi unions and drivers will be conducted to sensitize them about road safety.
