Nagaland Minister of Rural Development, Metsubo Jamir inaugurated the Sokhriezie Park, Sokhriezie Market and Waste Disposal Vehicle at P.R Hill, Kohima on December 4.

We should adhere to the concept of “sustainable development and waste management,” while undertaking any developmental project, Jamir said at the inaugural ceremony.

“Sokhriezie Park” is a centrally located lake that sits between Hotel Japfii and Fire Brigade Office in Kohima.

Jamir lauded the efforts of Tsiituonuomia Khel for taking the initiative for the beautification of the vital market place in Kohima, which has also given employment opportunities to over 223 local youths.

“A foundation stone for construction of Sokhriezie Park was laid by the then Minister for Tourism Vatsu Meru on June 16, 1999. However, because of lack of funds, the project could not be taken up,” Vice-Chairman (Planning), T. Khel Council, Neibou Sekhose, informed.

The total expenditure incurred in the restoration of ‘Sokhriezie Park’ is ₹ 50 lakh.

Funding on Sokhriezie Market, Sekhose informed that it was arranged from the monthly collection of old building tenants and contributions in the form of free labour.

Also, in partnership with the Kohima Smart City Development Ltd, there is a plan to construct 135 rooms with 100 plus vehicle parking lot under the Sokhriezie Market Phase-III.

The Vice-Chairman also said that ten local youths will be appointed for the security of the tenants and customers.

The venture has placed two waste disposal vehicles with eight sanitary personnel, to maintain cleanliness, he said.
