Nagaland: Konyak legislators clear proposed medical college in Mon district

A new site for the proposed medical college in Mon district, Nagaland, has been "officially" finalised after it was approved by Konyak legislators.

The site was entangled in a web of controversies soon after the foundation stone of the college was laid by Union Health & Family Welfare Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan on February 26, 2021.

Deputy Commissioner of Mon district, Thavaseelan K said that the Chi Village Council had revoked the earlier No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued to the Konyak Union (KU) and the district administration.

However, a second NOC was served again after the two parties (Govt and the village councils) failed to come to a logical conclusion in naming the new Medical College in Mon district.

"They had some conditions in terms of how they wanted the college naming, they wanted the reference of Chi in the college which was something that we were not ok with", Thavaseelan stated.

He added that after the Konyak legislators took matters into their hands, it was decided to look for a new location where there are no preconditions as the Kohima Medical college, which is still under construction, was also delayed due to similar land issues.

The new site is said to be around 5 km from Mon District Hospital.

The Deputy Commissioner further added that there is no opposition from anyone for the new site.
