KOHIMA, July 26, 2018: The state government has decided to step up its preventive measures to check the influx of illegal migrants from Assam, following the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in the state from July 31.

An official release on Wednesday stated that Nagaland police are deploying additional forces in the areas bordering Assam to check influx.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the home and police departments under the chairmanship of chief secretary Temjen Toy. The chief secretary informed the meeting that the state government would carry out exercise on enrolment under the NRC.

Additional Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) units are also being deployed, while flying squads will be sent to the border areas, the release added. The state government is writing to the village councils to be vigilant, prevent illegal migrants to enter their jurisdictions and not to employ them in any manner.

Instructions to the deputy commissioners have also been issued to take appropriate measures and issue necessary advisories to house owners to verify the identity of tenants from the authorities concerned and not to let out their premises to doubtful and suspicious people.

The state government has also received instructions from the Centre on prevention and checking of mob lynching, the release added.

This prompted the decision to set up a special task force under the respective superintendents of police in all districts.
