Nagaland | NSF prod for swift probe into midday meal scheme irregularities

DIMAPUR, August 23, 2018: The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) on Wednesday demanded a swift probe into the alleged irregularities in the midday meal scheme and asked the State Vigilance Commission to produce the report within a month.

In a memorandum to the state vigilance commissioner, the NSF said its members had visited various government schools and found that midday meal was not provided to students. It said the state government had "miserably failed" in implementation of the midday meal scheme and deprived students of their rights and benefits.

The union said most of the schools were not provided midday meal this academic session while many schools were supplied with only dal (pulses) and cooking cost without any other items compelling the school managements to sell a few bags of dal in order to purchase rice and other commodities to prepare a meal.

The union demanded probe into the discrepancies and strict action against the erring implementing agencies. The NSF had earlier appealed to the state government to expedite the investigation being undertaken by the commission. It said it had submitted a representation to the then chief minister T.R. Zeliang on October 26, 2017, on the discrepancies in the scheme.
