Monsoon in NE India; heavy rains continue to batter Sikkim & Assam
NORTHEAST INDIA | June 29, 2019:
Since the onset of Monsoon, Northeast India has been receiving good rains. In the last 48 hours, entire Northeast India, particularly the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have been receiving heavy to very heavy rains.
While Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded 292.4 mm of rains, Shillong saw 71.3 mm, Sikkim's Mangan saw 60.2 mm and Arunachal's Passighat received 89.5 mm.
These rains were due to an East-West Trough extending from Northwest India to Arunachal Pradesh across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Assam. Also, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal were blowing over Northeast India.
However, now, the rain intensity will reduce gradually, although the rains will continue. During the next 24 hours, moderate rains with one or two heavy spells may occur over Sikkim and parts of Assam while light to moderate rains are a possibility over Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

The rain intensity will reduce as a Cyclonic Circulation is going to form over Northeast and adjoining North Central Bay of Bengal. This Cyclonic Circulation will induce a Low-Pressure Area over Northwest Bay of Bengal which will restrict the flow of moisture-laden winds over Northwest India.
Due to decreased moisture availability, rains will go down but the weather will not become dry completely. On and off scattered light rains with one or two moderate spells will continue over the entire Northeast.
