AIZAWL: Mizoram recorded 67 deaths due to drug abuse in 2020.

An official from the Excise and Narcotics Department also mentioned that most of the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar.

"All the 67 people, who died of drug abuse last year, were addicted to heroin. The state government has been taking several measures to curb the menace," the official said.

According to the official, Spasmo proxyvon, a drug used as a pain killer, was the primary cause of drug-related deaths, post-2015 in the state.

The Mizoram narcotics record also showed that about 1,646 people, including 193 women, died of drug abuse since 1984.

The state reported 55 deaths caused by substance abuse in 2019.

Mizoram had sealed the international borders with Myanmar since March 2020, to reduce smuggling of drugs and alcoholic substances.
