MIZORAM POLLS 2018 LIVE UPDATE: 75 per cent over all voter turnout recorded

Mizoram – the BJP's last frontier in Northeast India is going to polls today. Polling to the 40-member legislative assembly of the hill state will decide the fate of 209 candidates. Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition and an ally of the BJP at the Centre, are contesting all 40 seats, BJP — which has never won an assembly election in Mizoram — has fielded candidates in 39 seats. Voting began at 7 am today and ended at close to 6 pm.

Official sources informed that 71 per cent voter turnout has been recorded till 4 pm. Inflow of voters at polling booths continue.

A voter turnout of 50 percent has been recorded at 1 pm this afternoon.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has urged the people of Mizoram to participate in large numbers as polling got underway in the state.

Voting in some booths delayed due to fault in 42 VVPATs, 19 control units and 25 ballot units.

A 29 per cent voter turnout has been recorded at 11am. Young and old alike thronged to the polling booths to exercise their rights. A 96-year-old was pictured casting her votes in in Kolasib:

10:30 am

Contrary to previous years, a large number of Bru refugees have turned up at the polling stations at Kanhmun this morning.

So far, 664 Bru votes have been casted from a total of 11988 voters.

The CEO said, "They started coming here since 6 AM in the morning. Till now there is around 10 percent turnout in the 15 polling booths set up for nine assembly constituencies at Kanhmun".

Around 25 per cent of the 7,68,181 voters cast their votes by 10 am.

09:30 am

A 15 per cent voter turnout has been recorded early this morning. Among the voters is an elderly woman from the Bru community.

Polling booths for Hachek, Dampa and Mamit assembly constituencies had 12% votes cast till 9 am. Thorang constituency had 25.8% votes cast while around 9% votes were cast at Kolasib constituency.

Except for 10 years — 1998-2003 and 2003-2008 — the Congress has been in power in Mizoram since it became a full-fledged state in 1987.
