We fear dust, not COVID-19: Residents of Meghalaya's Smit village

The deplorable condition of the road leading to Smit village, situated 18 kms away from the capital city of Shillong, Meghalaya, has raised eyeballs since last year.

TNT-The Northeast Today visited the village to get first-hand information and experience and this was what we found.

Notably, the village called Smit connects Shillong with famous tourist site - Laitlum Canyon and other scenic locations.

Residents complained that for the past few months since October last year, this road (under construction) had posed serious health problems even as they stated that they fear the dust emanating from the road rather than the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the 6-km stretch of the 8-km long road is already completed (black-topped), the remaining 2-km stretch at Lumkynsai locality and the market area is still under construction.

Interestingly, when the TNT team went back to the village, two days after the first visit, work started speeding up and black-topping of the remaining 2-km stretch had already started.
