GUWAHATI:

The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) commemorated the fifth death anniversary of former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Meghalaya Chief Minister (L) P.A Sangma at its campus in Baridua on Thursday.

They also paid floral tributes to the departed leader.

While addressing the gathering, the vice-chancellor of USTM, Prof. GD Sharma said, “The university is highly grateful to (L) P.A Sangma as he had played a vital role during the enactment of the USTM Act during the Meghalaya Assembly in 2008.”

“Late PA Sangma was a visionary leader who wanted to nurture the young minds through education,” Prof. Sharma said.

Floral tributes paid to the departed leader at the programme at USTM on Thursday.

“He had always been a mentor and well-wisher, and USTM is committed to him, particularly for his support and encouragement in our initiative to establish a higher educational institution in Meghalaya,” he added.

In September 2018, Meghalaya Minister James K Sangma launched the P.A Sangma Chair Professor for Tribal Studies at USTM, under which various research activities are being carried out.

“The most ambitious project of USTM presently is the proposed P.A Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, which will be established soon at the USTM campus,” a statement issued on Thursday said.

USTM has also instituted the P.A Sangma Best Undergraduate Award, which was first awarded during its fourth convocation in September 2018.
