Uplifting Meghalaya’s dairy sector: A new roadmap to empower dairy farmers

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and Dairy Development, Meghalaya, celebrated National Milk Day 2020 at Yojana Bhavan, Main Secretariat in the city on Thursday.

“National Milk Day is an appropriate celebration to honour the contributions of Dr Verghese Kurien, the ‘Father of the White Revolution’ in transforming the dairy sector and rural livelihood across the country,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said in his address to the gathering.

He also expressed hope that the various government initiatives and programmes to ramp up milk production in the state would transform the dairy sector.

Tynsong also said that the Government had envisioned a roadmap to empower dairy farmers and uplift rural livelihood through various mission mode projects under the dairy sector in the state.

“Milk is an important source of vitamins and protein, and it could be an answer to combat malnutrition and improve (the) overall health of our children. In trying to fulfil the production requirement of our state in the dairy sector, we are also creating a strong institutional setup in terms of cooperative societies which ultimately will give economic benefit to the people,” Tynsong said.

Others who attended the programme included the principal secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, G.H.P. Raju, the chairman of the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission, K.N. Kumar, and the secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Manjunatha C.
