Shillong: Misusing hazard lights to attract penalty

 |

SHILLONG:

Many may find it frustrating to witness others misusing the safety features of their vehicles with one primary example being hazard light abuse.

However, traffic police in Shillong recently informed that they would start penalising drivers for abusing hazard lights.

According to Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the misuse of hazard lights is a punishable act and can attract fines of up to Rs. 300.

We may note that most drivers in Shillong are known to use hazard lights, which they call "double signal", to indicate driving straight at a junction.

However, hazard lights are to be used to warn other drivers that the vehicle is a temporary obstruction, usually after a breakdown or an accident.

They are also called hazard flashers or hazard warning lights.

"Drivers will be fined for misusing the warning lights. The fine will be Rs 100 for first-time offenders and up to Rs 300 subsequently under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act," said a Shillong Traffic Police official.
