Various NGOs of the Dainadubi region in North Garo Hills (NGH) district on November 23, filed an FIR at the Dainadubi outpost after they apprehended a vehicle carrying illegal timber allegedly from the forest areas around the village.

The NGOs, including the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), and Chilpara Development Centre (CDC) have written to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of East Garo Hills (EGH), under which the area falls seeking more vigilance from the forest department in stopping the illegal acts.

The NGOs had stopped the vehicle bearing registration AS 18 9236 yesterday at about 10:30 am, coming from the Sat-Mile area, Gairon Forest Reserve, illegally.

When the truck was stopped, the driver and helper in the vehicle fled the scene after which the truck was handed over to the Nameram Forest Beat office.

“These kinds of acts are condemnable and they are causing severe environmental damage,” said the NGOs.

The NGOs mentioned the Chima Bangsi Reserve Forest was currently under the threat of being overrun because of the illegal activities of certain greedy individuals and sought strict action against those responsible.
