Meghalaya's PMAY beneficiaries looted by political agents in Selsella, alleges BJP

TURA:

The Garo Hills chapter of the BJP alleged that certain political agents were cheating beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), by seeking deals for providing them low-cost housing.

PMAY is a centrally sponsored scheme that provides Rs 1.3 lakh for setting up of houses for the homeless or those families living in kutcha houses in rural areas, as per the 2011 census.

“This was a dream scheme of the BJP government, but political agents in Garo Hills are acting as middlemen between the public and the C&RD Block officials and making deals before issuing the schemes,” alleged party spokesperson, Bernard Marak.

They made the allegation following a recorded conversation between one alleged political agent and a beneficiary, a recording which was sent to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Power Minister James Sangma and Tura MP Agatha Sangma.

In the recorded conversation, the agent can be heard assuring the beneficiary of issuing the scheme and instructing him to complete the house in Rs 90,000 besides asking him to set aside not less than Rs 10,000 for Block officials per household.

“The scheme was meant to benefit the poor, but the way they are implementing the scheme is nothing less than looting them. The substandard PMAY house is not something BJP will compromise on. People who are victims of such corrupt practice should approach the BJP leaders,” Marak stated in a press release.

The BJP stated that despite the efforts of the party to provide the best scheme, the political agents were superseding even the Block officials.

“The agents, who are local political leaders, seem to have a good influence on the officials, and this needs to be verified by the authorities. Unfortunately, the political party in question is BJP’s coalition partner in the State Government. They are stabbing the poor people in the rural areas and bringing shame to the noble initiative of BJP,” he alleged.

Marak said the BJP would not take such corruption lightly and asked the administration and Block officials to take immediate action to book the culprit, no matter what party they belonged to.

He also asked people who are deprived or are facing similar problems to contact them.

“We want everyone to benefit from the schemes meant for every Indian and uproot the very root of corruption,” he said.
