SHILLONG:

The Archbishop of Shillong, Most Rev Victor Lyngdoh has expressed his solidarity with the Jesuit fathers and the labourers who were attacked at St. Xavier's Girls Hostel, in Meghalaya's South West Khasi Hills, which led to the death of one worker.

"Our hearts go out to the family members of the deceased worker, Late Raju Mondal and to all those who are injured," Rev Lyngdoh said in a statement.

"We understand that the incident has shaken their morale and spirit. We express our solidarity with the Jesuit fathers and, we stand with them in their decision to halt all developmental work in Umoid until an amicable settlement is arrived at," the statement read.

"We also express our gratefulness to the Government and Local Administration for their prompt action in handling the situation. On behalf of the Catholic Church, we would like to assure the Jesuits and the people of the area our prayerful support," he added.

On February 24 night, unknown miscreants barged into a room where eight labourers, working at a construction site belonging to St. Xavier’s Girls hostel in Umoid, were sleeping and started attacking them.

Meghalaya Police, on February 26, arrested three persons in connection with the attack.
