Meghalaya village “reels” under darkness for over two years, NGO seeks redressal

The United Achik Youth Federation (UAYF) has highlighted the poor condition of the villagers of Maheshkola under South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) district after they found the village has been without electricity for the past two years.

Maheshkola is among the remotest part of the state falling between the borders of South Garo Hills (SGH), South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) and the international border with Bangladesh. It is also close to the Balpakram National Park.

“This is gross negligence of the state and district authorities, as the village has been without electricity. Maheshkola is still into the dark ages, literally,” said the president of UAYF, Sanggra Marak.

Marak urged the authorities of the district to immediately take up the matter, as the people have suffered from the false promises of the representatives of the constituency.

“They think they have no hope of seeing lights in their village. We can’t understand why the rural belt of the state is so neglected by those in power that they do not even consider them to deserve basic amenities. Don’t they have the rights to enjoy the same? The neglect of the authorities is hurting the young students in their studies as well,” Marak added.

The NGO also demanded the immediate fixation of the power lines, transformer and cables to restore electricity between the villages of Bagli and Maheshkola, especially in the evening hours.
